If you have Ramco Engineering mirrors on your motorhome, they may be wiggling and need to know how to tighten them to the motorhome body before they ultimately fall off! Here I document how I did it, as it took a little bit of faith in the first steps to accomplish this!
Disclaimer: This is not a “how-to” article, but a “how I did it” article. Take care with your own project. While this is a fairly safe project, there was the blind faith that I had to put a little elbow grease into getting the mirror arm out of the mirror mount. The mount is attached to the motorhome’s fiberglass body with four screws that are hidden by a chrome cover which you can only access after total disassembly.
Steps for the Repair
The following steps are the steps I took, on how I was able to successfully adjust our 2008 Newmark KountyStar’s rear view mirror on the passenger side. The assumption is that the driver side would be no different.
- Mark the mirror arm and the mirror mount position.
- Remove the “Ramco Engineering” logo plug under the mount to access the bolt that attaches the mirror arm to the mount.
- Remove the bolt from the mount with a socket wrench.
- Hand-screw the bolt back into the mount slightly.
- While holding the mirror arm tightly, lightly tap the bolt head with a mallet to break the mirror arm loose. (This was the part of blind faith I finally had to take, as my project was stalled for months to figure this out!)
- Still holding onto the mirror mount, remove the bolt.
- Disconnect the wiring harness from the mirror at the mount side.
- Completely remove the mirror from the mount and set it aside.Remove the chrome cover from the mirror mount.
- Tighten the four mounting screws as needed. Use a small block of wood behind the fiberglass if the holes are stripped or enlarged. Be careful not to overtighten and crack the fiberglass.
- Replace the chrome cover over the mount.
- Connect the mirror arm wiring harness to the mount side.
- Insert the mirror into the mount, align the arm to the mark from Step 1, and tighten down the bolt.
- Replace the “Ramco Engineering” cover over the bolt.
Tips Recap
- Mark the current position of the mirror arm on the mirror mount so you can easily return it to the correct alignment.
- Just before removing the bolt from the mount, lightly tap it with a mallet to dislodge the arm.
- After removing the arm, you will need to disconnect the wiring harness before fully separating the mirror arm from the mount.
- Once the mirror arm is off, you can remove the chrome cover over the mirror mount and expose the mounting screws. Be careful not to overtighten and damage the fiberglass.
